A Bittersweet Birthday : My Baby Turns 5

Birthdays have always been a big deal in my family.

It’s YOUR special day.  It’s the day that the Lord saw fit for you to enter the world.  No one can ever take that day away from you.  Needless to say, we celebrate for at least a week per person in my family.

And in the eyes of a child, a birthday is such a magical and wonderful time.  I know one little girl who has been asking for at least 6 months, “When will it be my birthday?”  I’m sure time has passed slowly for her, but at her mama it has literally happened in a blink.

A few years ago I didn’t think I would ever get to celebrate the birthday of child -- “my” child.  I am thankful today and every day that He blessed us all with her.

However, this birthday is a tad bittersweet.  It’s the one that marks the ending of one era and the beginning of another; big school, learning to read, not being a preschooler, just to name a few. However, one thing will always remain.

She is my baby. And always will be.

I didn’t know how someone could “always be my baby.” I didn’t know how that would feel and what it really meant seemed crazy, but I can remember my mama saying it to me as I was growing up.

Today, more than ever, I know.

So as we enter year five and encounter a whole lot of changes, I will embrace the “Mommy I need you,” just a little bit more.  They are little for not nearly long enough. For the time passes way too quickly.

And like my Granny Carrie always said, “Spoil them while they’re little.  You can’t make nothing out of them but grown people.”

Happy Birthday Aubrey!

The world awaits!

We love you!
